So big earrings are “back”!
I say “back” because one look at countries like Greece or the drag queen community will tell you they never left. But as of the most recent fashion month seasons, statement earrings are coming back into the mainstream in a big way: peep the funky plate-like disks adorning the earlobes of models at Creatures of the Wind’s SS17 show or Hellessy’s interlocking circular creations that may or may not be wide enough to wear as bracelets.
Of course I’ve been over here championing obnoxiously large earrings for the better part of five years like the quirky trailblazer that I am. I persevered through the comments made that my earrings looked like they were trying to escape back to the 80s. I put on a brave face every time someone enquired why I was wearing clip-on earrings when I have four different ear piercings. I stoically suffered in silence because I knew my time would come.
Actually I didn’t. I wore clip-ons because they were my grandma’s and I couldn’t be bothered to go buy new ones— who ever thinks about buying new earrings? They’re not shoes. No one goes “yeah I really need to go shopping, I’m in the market for some new hoops”— and was in fact quite the snarky piece of work anytime anyone brought it up. But that’s neither here nor there. For all intents and purposes, I forsaw this coming. I am the Nostradamus of fashion.
I love statement earrings because I think there’s nothing chicer than a super simple outfit dressed up with earrings. Necklaces are trying too hard, no one gives a shit about bracelets in the winter, and when’s the last time a ring made an outfit?
But big statement earrings take a jeans-and-tee outfit from meh to trendy. I’m here for little things like that making me feel fashionable with minimal effort.
Yes, I may lose my earlobes in the process, but what is life without a little risk? And more importantly, what is fashion without beautiful yet impractical pieces that may cause damage to your wellbeing? Do you think Lady Gaga wears 7 inch heels for her health?
